The History of Fort Riley

Fort Riley was built in 1853 and was named in honor of Major General Bennet C. Riley. The fort was originally built to assist traders and travelers along the Santa Fe trails, but after the Civil War, it became a major U.S. Calvary post for tactics and training. Also, after the Civil War, Fort Riley was home to the infamous General Custer and served as a base for skirmishes against local Native Americans. In 1887, Fort Riley became the site of the United States Cavalry School, and home to the famous 9th and 10th all-black regiments. The Fort was also said to have been ground zero for the 1918 Spanish Flu. Since the end of World War II, several different infantry divisions have been stationed at Fort Riley. The fort has played a role in each major war since, including the Korean War, the Cold War, Vietnam, and the Gulf War.
